HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011
Friday, December 31, 2010
Dear Martin,
Happy New Year, my fitness friend!
New Year’s Day is right around the corner and you know what that means … time to make your resolutions to get a fit body, mind and spirit! And I’m here to help you keep them this year.
New Year’s resolutions fail for various reasons. Sometimes they’re too broad, sometimes they’re unrealistic, or sometimes you just don’t know what to do to achieve your goal.
So here are four ways to help keep your New Year’s resolution on improving your fitness this year:
1. Put yourself first. You make time for other people every day, but you might not give yourself the attention you need (and deserve!). Give yourself a portion of your day all to yourself … even if it’s only 20 minutes. Devote that time to improving your mind, body and spirit by doing one of my great fat-burning workouts or taking some time to meditate.
2. Make it mandatory. You brush your teeth every day without exception … well, hopefully ;) … you shower … you walk the dog … Why? Because you have to, and it’s part of your daily routine. This year, switch exercising and eating right from “optional” to “mandatory” and see how quickly your body, confidence and overall health improves. No excuses!
3. Set mini goals. Instead of saying I won’t ever eat chocolate again or I’m going to work out every day for the rest of the year, start small. Take it one day at a time. This way, you can be happy you accomplished something and have the motivation to keep going strong. You could start by trying one of my online training courses for simple, easy-to-follow workouts that are broken down into daily segments. So every day you follow the program, it’s like you just reached another goal!
4. Learn how to set goals. To reach your goals, you’ve got to know what to do and how to stay motivated. And I have the perfect video clip for you. It describes a sure-fire way to accomplish your goals. All you need is some guidance and inspiration. Click here to watch it.
Lots of Peace, Love, Energy and Happiness!
Yarixa "Coach Yari" Ferrao
P.S. Keep in mind, change is key when making resolutions. Don’t be afraid to try new things until you find what works for you. Doing the same thing you’ve always done won’t give you the results you’re looking for. Have an amazing 2011!

Top 10 steps Tips to Tighten that Tush
Tuesday, December 21, 2010
Dear Martin,
Whether, you’re a guy or gal, having a great rear end is definitely in style. Big or small, luscious or lean there is nothing wrong with improving on nature.
The first thing to do is to get yourself in the proper mindset … whatever you can use for positive reinforcement. Maybe hang up a picture of someone who has the kind of rear you would like to have one day. Or buy those skinny jeans you just can’t wait to get into. Imagine all the new attention you are about to receive from the opposite sex. Whatever you can find to use for motivation is entirely up to you. You can be successful in having a spectacular rear end. Thousands of people already have.
Some of the best exercises I’ve found come from Dr. Al Sears, MD – the creator of the patented PACE 12-minute fitness program and fitness instructor Yarixa Ferrao (better known as Coach Yari). She’s helped dozens of people tighten and lift their butts with her booty bootcamp.
Their exercises below have helped me get a tighter tush. And if you’re willing to give these exercises a reasonable amount of time and attention, you’ll see the results you want and will take the first step in getting a bodacious booty.
1. Try not to rush through your exercises. Hold each move for at least 30 seconds. Focus exclusively on tightening your behind. Every single move and thought is directed on nothing else. Believe it, and make it happen.
2. If you can do more than 15 reps without muscle fatigue, it’s time to increase your resistance. Add a little extra to your sets whenever you can. Also, it’s very important you rest and recover between each set. Make sure you push yourself a little harder each day. Try to feel the burn, create an oxygen debt with each set and progressively challenge yourself the next time
3. Squats and lunges are the most typical of all the butt-exercise moves. They can also be a little boring, and if not done properly, can be a little painful. Make sure to keep your back straight and knees in line with your feet. Press into the floor as you rise out of the lunge/squat while squeezing your butt. Do it slowly. The good thing about theses exercises is they will also work your quads.
4. The “Bridge” is my all-time favorite. You can even do it while lying in bed. Lie face up with one knee bent and the other extended toward the ceiling. Lift your hips as far up as you can and hold and squeeze for five seconds. Repeat this move 10 times and pulse it for 5 and then rest. Switch legs and repeat. The results will be absolutely beautiful, but with a burn like you wouldn’t believe! Check out Coach Yari’s instructions on The Bridge here.
5. Step Ups are also great exercises. Find a step and climb off and on repeatedly. If the steps are short, you could use the same leg to lead for a set and then switch legs.
6. Skipping is also one of the best entire body workouts ever. It’s excellent for your heart and lungs, too. Jump as high as you can and as fast, for a period of one minute, then rest and recover. Repeat three times.
7. When attempting dead lifts (using dumbbells or barbells), don’t forget to keep your knees straight but not locked. Slowly bend forward at the hips until you feel a nice stretch in your hamstring. Contract your glutes while you rise back up into a standing position.
8. Standing and laying abduction exercises will target the outer part of those cheeks. Any extra fat on those hips will soon disappear. By keeping your legs straight, slowly raise one of your legs as high as possible to the side of your body. Do your desired number of reps and repeat with the other legs
9. Try parking a little further away from your destination and hoof it whenever possible … This works whenever you’re going to the mall, supermarket and even the office. There’s no reason to sit and wait for closer parking when you could get a little extra moving time. You’ll be surprised at how good that feels and how much easier it is to get in a little workout.
10. Another tip from Dr. Sears: After you’re finished with your workout, add some extra protein powder to your recovery drink. This will help reduce muscle damage.
Keep on Stylin’!

There are two new things we now know about chocolate.
Friday, December 24, 2010
Dear Martin
By now, I’m sure you’ve heard about chocolate’s benefits. I’ve seen it reported in magazines and on the evening news. But I have new evidence that makes chocolate even sweeter.
There are two new things we now know about chocolate
First, I have evidence that eating chocolate can cut your risk from dying of stroke nearly in half.
In one study, people who ate one serving of chocolate per week were 22 percent less likely to have a stroke.1
Another study found that people who ate 50 grams of chocolate once a week were 46 percent less likely to die following a stroke than those who didn’t eat chocolate.2
About 80 percent of strokes occur when there isn’t enough blood getting to the brain.3 Your brain is starved of oxygen and nutrients and begins to die immediately.
Chocolate helps to counteract that in two ways. It’s rich in antioxidants and helps to increase circulation.
You may get a rush of pleasure when you bite into a piece of chocolate. But chocolate gives you more than instant gratification. It’s filled with antioxidants called flavonoids. And flavonoids protect the body.
Which leads me to the second new thing about chocolate. These flavonoids found in chocolate fight silent inflammation, which is the leading cause of chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, dementia and stroke as I mentioned above, among many others.4
You can find flavonoids in vegetables, tea and red wine, but cocoa has more flavonoids.5 In fact, dark chocolate contains up to four times the antioxidants found in tea.6
But that’s not all this holiday treat can do.
The flavonol-rich cocoa in chocolate is also a vasodilator meaning it relaxes your blood vessels. It widens blood vessels so circulation is improved. This brings an increased blood flow to the brain. It also helps to lower blood pressure and improve heart function. Vasodilators like the cocoa in chocolate also help to increase circulation to sexual organs so they’re ready to respond when you are.
No wonder the scientific name for cocoa translates to “food of the gods.”
When you’re looking for a good source of chocolate, keep this in mind:
• Look for chocolate that contains 70 percent or more cocoa. This is the ingredient that contains health benefits.
• Check how much sugar is added to the chocolate you choose. Keep it as low as possible. But choose sugar over artificial sweeteners or chocolate labeled “sugar free.”
• Beware of other chemicals in the chocolate. Choose a brand that has pure ingredients and no chemical additives.
• Make chocolate your special treat of choice once a week.
• You can find good quality chocolate at a health-food store but more and more of the “good stuff” is finding its way into grocery and drug stores.
To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, MD

Dear Martin,
Stress can really take a toll on your skin. It’s one of the biggest culprits when it comes to acne, wrinkles, hives, and other skin conditions like rosacea.
In fact, there’s a field of science devoted to the connection between stress and skin conditions. It’s called psychodermatology.
This science looks at how your emotions affect your skin. Experts in this field have shown that more and more skin problems are related to your psyche. Things like meditation, relaxation techniques, and exercise are proven to help.1
Yup, exercise does wonders for your skin. It helps you:
Sweat out toxins
Regenerate new cells and optimize collagen production, helping reduce wrinkles
Bring more blood flow and nutrients to the skin, generating a healthy glow
Reduce STRESS, a huge cause of many skin conditions!
Exercising helps relieve stress because it:
Releases endorphins, your brain’s “feel-good” chemicals
Reduces the production of stress hormones like cortisol
Improves your self confidence, so it improves your mood
Allows you to concentrate on the moment and being present. This helps elevate your mood and energy!
Brings more blood flow and oxygen to your brain
Physically allows you to endure everyday tasks easier, therefore relieving some physical stress that you might have to deal with otherwise
Relieves feelings of anger and hostility
Below are my three favorite exercises for reducing stress levels and helping your skin stay bright and healthy!
Click on each exercise to follow along with me
1. Pushups
2. Burpees
3. Diaphragmatic Breathing

THOUSAND YEAR OLD OIL BEATS CANCER
Dear Martin,
This is exciting news: Tea tree oil could be the natural, simple, and inexpensive answer to non-melanoma skin cancer.
Non-melanoma skin cancer is very common. There are over 100,000 new cases diagnosed every year in the UK.1
Treatment done with tea tree oil has been shown to slow the growth of tumors and lesions already in action. Plus, it helps boost the body’s immune system to help combat the cancer at an even higher level.2
The idea that tea tree oil could beat skin cancer was tested on solid, non-melanoma cancerous tumors in mice. The tumors regressed within one day of treatment. And within three days, the tumors couldn’t be detected.3
Those are some amazing results.
Using tea tree oil to help cure skin cancer could mean the end of painful, disfiguring surgery to remove cancerous tissue. Patients may no longer have to endure months of chemotherapy that makes them feel nauseas and sick.
In fact, the only side effects associated with tea tree oil is mild skin irritation that disappears within days.4
This amazing essential oil is a natural, renewable source found in the Melaluca tree native to South Wales.
Tea tree oil has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years by our ancient ancestors. They used tea tree oil as a natural antibiotic to treat scars and wounds.
This versatile oil is used to treat conditions like psoriasis, herpes, respiratory problems, warts, su burns, in addition to other bacterial and fungal skin ailments. And it helps clear up acne like nothing else I’ve seen.
Here are just 5 of the many ways you can use tea tree oil on your own:
Apply a few drops of diluted oil to small scratches or scrapes. It helps them heal faster and with less scarring.
Put a single drop of oil on a cotton swab and dab on a pimple to help it clear up in no time.
Add a few drops added to a warm bath can help you relax and soothe sore muscles.
Rub diluted oil on your skin to use as an anti-fungal for treating athlete’s foot, eczema, and various yeast infections.
Add a small amount to shampoo to get rid of head lice.
To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, MD

Charice gets Botox, skin-tightening procedure before debut on 'Glee'
MANILA, Philippines - Baby-faced teen singer Charice says she prepared for her debut on the hit Fox TV show "Glee" by getting Botox and an anti-aging procedure "to look fresh on camera," but her publicist said the Botox was for muscle pain, not for cosmetic reasons
The 18-year-old Filipino singer with a booming voice, who recently released her self-titled debut album, saw her career skyrocket after appearing on Ellen DeGeneres' and Oprah Winfrey's talk shows. She underwent a 30-minute Thermage skin-tightening procedure and Botox injections to make her "naturally round face" more narrow, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo told ABS-CBN television.
However, Charice's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said in an email Monday the Botox was "absolutely not cosmetic," and added said the treatment was for muscle pain in her jaw.
Belo did the Botox procedure in front of the cameras.
"You chew gum and it turns out to be a favourite super-exercise for these muscles, your chewing muscles. So we will show you, this muscle here it's a bit protruding," Belo said as she touched Charice's face. "It's like a ball, so we are going to Botox that in order to get it flat so she will have a cuter face ... we want to give you the apple cheek look because it's cute, right?"
Charice, in the same interview, said last week's face makeover was part of her big preparations for her appearance on the hit show's second season. She starts filming at the end of this month.
"All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is she good enough to pit against Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure," Charice said. Berry is portrayed by Lea Michele, who is 23.
In an earlier TV interview, Charice said she auditioned for "Glee" in mid-June in Los Angeles and was thankful to have been accepted.
"It's really a blessing," she said, adding she was "very proud to be an Asian, very proud to be Filipino."
On the streets of Manila on Monday, some residents who follow Charice had mixed feelings about what she did with her face.
"I think it's OK for women to have procedures done, but Charice is too young. Does she need it?" said Patricia Carpio, a 21-year-old student.
For Myrna Lumanao, a 23-year-old seller in a doughnut stall, looking natural is better. "I guess she can afford to have those procedures done because she has the money, but I wish she did not change her looks."
Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of New York's Society of Plastic Surgeons and director of plastic surgery at Maimonides Medical Center in New York, said he wasn't sure how someone so young could benefit from Botox. "You would think that the makeup people could take care of (any wrinkles she might have) or that they could take care of it in post-production," he said.
But Roth said there might be some benefits for on-camera teens in Hollywood. "Some people do have hyperactive muscles and muscles are what create the wrinkles in certain types of expressions. ... It may be of some benefit for the camera, but I would be reticent to consider Botox for a normal 18-year-old."
Thermage is a non-surgical procedure that uses radio frequency technology, but Roth said evidence was inconclusive on whether skin can be tightened without surgery.
Born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco and raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appeared on TV talent shows in the Philippines and South Korea before she got a big break on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" at age 15.
She later appeared several times on the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and credits Winfrey for helping push her career.

On the Call: Avon CEO Jung discusses skin care
Avon Products Inc. reported Thursday that second quarter net income rose, as sales of beauty products grew across all categories. Fragrance rose 16 percent, makeup grew 12 percent, skin care grew 4 percent and personal care grew 3 percent.
Avon's skin-care products such as Skin-So-Soft, Solutions and Anew lotions have traditionally be strong sellers. Here an analyst asks why sales growth is less than other categories this quarter.
Yahoo! BuzzQUESTION: My question has to do with the skin-care business which over the last few years has been such a big driver of your growth. Yet for two quarters in a row, it's been really soft and slower growth than either fragrances and color. I'm wondering if that's just timing of new products or what because I assume if that business starts to grow again, given how high margin some of those products are, that would be really good."
RESPONSE: It's primarily weakness in our Solutions brand, which is a mid-tier brand which we are restaging. We still have good srength in Anew, and it's a little bit of timing there. But we feel really good about Anew and its performance in the full year. And so the weakness you saw in the last two quarters is from the mid-tier Solutions brand

The War For Financial Independence: The Call to Surrender
Theyre saying the ideal of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is dead. Deal with it.
Why, there hasn't been this much unanimity among Washington elites since - well, since they "knew" there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Here's what they "know" now: The United States is doomed to a future of staggeringly high unemployment. Social Security is part of our national deficit and, like that notorious village in Vietnam, we need to destroy it in order to save it. And we must face an open-ended future where the public treasury and personal security are held hostage to the whims of a few "too big to fail" banks.
Some of these "conventional wisdoms" have been around for years, while others are forming as we speak. Most of them began as politically partisan ideas, but have only been Sacred Truths for a few months. Yet they're already acquiring the false gravitas of ancient received wisdoms. What's the common thread behind these three ideas? They provide a rationale for not resisting the enormous political influence of corporations and wealthy Americans.
The last few days - ironically, those that led up to our celebration of Independence - saw a sudden rash of white-flag declarations. This latest wave of surrender demands involves joblessness. First Digby noted that Jonathan Alter said the following in an interview with Chris Hayes on the "Ed Show" : "We are going to have to accustom ourselves to some higher than, you know, old normal percentage of unemployment. You know, I don't know whether it's seven percent, six percent, whatever."
Before the viewer could utter a Scooby Doo "ruh-roh," The New Republic published a piece by William Galson called "America Will Never Be the Same." In reviewing a Pew study's findings on the Great Recession's impact, Galston writes: "... (W)e do have reason to believe that ... we're in for a slow recovery and historically high levels of unemployment for much of this decade." And, as if on cue, CNN Money published an piece called "7.9 million jobs lost - many forever."
In an article entitled "Spend or Scrimp? Two Sides in a White House Debate," we learned this week that those in the White House who are "focused on deficits - or at least on positioning Mr. Obama to show his concern -- are his chief strategist, David Axelrod, other political advisers and Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, according to Democrats."
Axelrod says, "it's my job to report what the public mood is," as if the President were merely a passive observer of public opinion and not a potential shaper. Adds Axelrod, "I've made the point that as a matter of policy and a matter of politics that we need to focus on (deficits)." And what better way to erode resistance to that approach than by building a consensus among friendly liberals? The new consensus view: It's impossible to provide the sorts of stimulus that would be needed to address high unemployment, so "we" (by which is meant the jobless - not "we" at all) have to accept it.
Am I suggesting a White House-led conspiracy to undermine stimulus thinking? No. The White House understands that some stimulus will be needed. As with most such consensus thinking, "a conspiracy of shared values" is more than enough. And, as with all Washington trends, a "consensus" is formed by persuading liberals to adopt right-wing ideas, not the other way around. "We'd all love to bring unemployment down," the thinking goes, "but it's just not going to happen."
Let's be clear: Every American who is condemned to long-term unemployment has been shut out of the American dream. When DC insiders encourage us to accept that fixing the problem is too politically challenging, they're telling us that we as a nation must accept profound economic misery for millions of our fellow citizens.
They're also telling us to accept a more racially-divided nation, with a race-based gap in unemployment so severe that it could rightfully be called "jobs apartheid." When African American unemployment is virtually double that of whites and we're asked to accept that structural unemployment is here to stay, we're being told that Martin Luther King's dream of economic equality between the races is one we can no longer afford.
Bear in mind, there has been no NAFTA-like change in the US job situation to explain these new unemployment figures. The Great Recession, not outsourcing, took this last wave of jobs. Why can't we work to rebuild our economy on a firmer foundation and get many of those jobs back? The answer comes, in large part, because of fear of what Paul Krugman calls the "invisible bond vigilantes." The fear - or the stated fear - is these bogeymen will make sure that bond markets don't invest in the United States unless we slash government spending. (As Krugman points out, the "wisdom of the market" says they like our government's actions just fine, but that's apparently beside the point.)
Cui bono - who benefits? One can only speculate. If a government that has spent trillions to rescue the banking industry now spends billions to get people back to work, that could result in a drive for greater taxation of those who benefited from the bank bailout. The same with the new "bipartisan" assault on Social Security. Social Security's minor long-term financial problems could easily be fixed by raising the contribution levels. But that would render it politically immune to being used as a piggy bank for fixing tax-cut-driven deficits. They want to use it as a regressive tax on middle-class earnings instead. What's more, cuts to Social Security would drive more people to invest their savings with the very banks that created that deficit - a double win for Wall Street.
Banking interests are one reason there's been little support so far for economist Robert H. Frank's proposal - a program that restructures consumer debt through direct Federal loans to credit card holders buried by what they owe. Morally, it's no different than the bank bailout. The benefits for the overall economy (in increased spending) would be immediate and real. But the right people don't benefit so it hasn't become part of the Washington consensus.
Americans need jobs, and jobs would benefit the economy. Social Security is one of the most stable government programs we have. And Federal actions should benefit the entire economy and its participants, not just a few wealthy bankers. These are the kinds of truths our nation's founders once called "self-evident."
In the halls of government nowadays, unfortunately, self-evident truths aren't what they used to be.

Young Adult Skin Care: Acne and Blemishe
Diet continues to be a leading problem involved in acne and its treatment. Some foods give off substances that reciprocate to the skin, causing further problems or preventing current problems from getting better and healing. Contrary to popular beliefs, however, these foods do not involve chocolate and oily foods. Rather food allergies are much more likely to cause acne. This works a similar way to milk products and allergies. Allergies, although not always confirmed by study, can be influenced by milk products. Food allergies, in the same manner, can also affect acne flare-ups and treatment. If you have severe acne, it may be beneficial to see an allergist to determine if you have an allergy that needs to be treated. By doing so you can have better looking skin by simply avoiding certain foods.
Another way to control acne, as previously discussed, involves the use of drugs. Certain products, both prescription and over-the-counter, can often help with mild to moderate acne. Severe acne can be treated with special prescriptions from your physician. If you are just starting an acne medication that is over-the-counter, it is a good idea to check with your doctor to ensure that you should start the medication. It is also a good idea to start with an over-the-counter medication first after talking to a physician if you have only mild acne to help save money.
Lifestyle habits can also affect acne flare-ups and how they behave. Certain make-up and other cosmetic products can severely affect acne due to the nature of the substance. Hairsprays, for instance, can clog pores, causing acne outbreaks. Oil-based make-up can do the same thing. For this reason, it is best to avoid these kinds of substances. It is also a good idea to try to keep from getting too much sun, and avoid picking at pimples that do form. Finally, reduce stress in your life to combat acne and keep outbreaks from happening

SEC alleges fraud at Seattle skin-care retailer's
According to the SEC, Karl Redekopp, the former chief financial officer of International Commercial Television Inc. (ICTV), fraudulently reported millions of dollars of sales of ICTV’s Derma Wand, a device that purportedly would reduce wrinkles and improve skin appearance, “while the products still sat unsold in the company’s warehouse.”
According to the SEC, ICTV overstated revenue and net income from February 2007 to June 2008 by a total of $7.6 million. SEC officials said the agency settled its case with the company, but is pursuing its case against the former CFO
“Redekopp violated fundamental principles of accounting to fraudulently boost ICTV’s bottom line and conceal its true financial health from investors. Unfortunately, ICTV’s auditors turned a blind eye to the company’s financial irregularities and failed to fulfill their role in investor protection,” said Marc Fagel, director of the SEC’s San Francisco regional office, in a statement.
Redekopp lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and resigned from ICTV in August 2008. ICTV is headquartered on Bainbridge Island. The SEC filed its complaint charging him with fraud in federal district court in Tacoma.

Identify and Learn from your Mistakes
There is no better way to learn how to succeed in business than to learn from mistakes—yours or someone else’s. I often come across case studies looking into how and why certain companies smashed records, busted budgets and succeeded beyond all imagination. Those studies have their uses, of course, but it’s the stories of businesses that didn’t turn out so well that truly interest me. I learn much more from them.
One of the reasons Virgin’s enterprises have been successful over the years is that we empower the staff to make mistakes— and then learn from them. Since our management structure is very decentralized, our teams are challenged to run the businesses as if they were the owners. I have found that this creates a high level of loyalty, devotion and innovation. When things do go wrong, the team members feel such ownership of the enterprise that they usually roll up their sleeves and turn it around
This ability to bounce back after a setback is the single most important trait an entrepreneurial venture can possess. If innovation is at the heart of your business, obstacles come with the territory. How you react to and navigate those hurdles will make the difference between failure and success.
I’ve been lucky enough to helm many successful companies, but I’m the first to admit that I’ve also directed a few that failed. You may have heard of Virgin Cola, a company we formed in the 1990s to take on the industry’s two big powerhouses: Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. We attempted to shake up the market in true Virgin fashion, but it didn’t quite work. From the outset, we faced distribution issues—we couldn’t get Virgin Cola on the shelves in the numbers needed to make an impact and achieve economies of scale.
We certainly didn’t lack enthusiasm, but we quickly learnt that the two giants had a firm grip on the market. It was tough to find their weaknesses. Taking on two of the biggest brands in the world, both of which proved to be anything but complacent, was a tremendous lesson for all of us. But still, one of my fondest memories is of our publicizing Virgin Cola’s attack on Coke by driving into Times Square in a huge army tank and taking aim at the Coca-Cola billboard!
A more recent example involves Virgin Money (our financial services arm) in Australia, where we introduced our first Virgin branded credit card in 2003. The Australian banking industry is monopolized by four major concerns: ANZ Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank Ltd and Westpac Banking Corp. Altogether, they handle 80% of all banking transactions in Australia. Though we entered the market for the right reasons and had a terrific product, we took the wrong approach with the partner bank that issued the card, which eventually led to the business’s demise.
It was a tough loss for many of our customers. As a matter of fact, when I’m in Australia, I still meet people who carry their old Virgin cards in their wallets! We vowed to launch an even better card as soon as the right opportunity presented itself.
Which brings me to the next stage: bouncing back. Nearly three years after the failure of the original Virgin credit card, I have returned to Sydney both to relaunch a range of card products and to start the Virgin Saver online savings account. The difference this time: We have the right people and the right partner (Citibank) for achieving long-term success.
I suppose the secret to bouncing back is to be unafraid of failure. Setbacks are discouraging, but you should always try to channel that feeling into positive action. The key to Virgin’s continuing success has been this simple idea: When we get something wrong, we try to understand why and quickly make a change. Then we focus on what works and take it to the next country or industry or sector.
If you can identify and learn from your mistakes, you have a much greater chance of bouncing back from them—and succeeding the next time.

Achieving Your Dreams
Achieving Your Dreams
by Jim Rohn
While most people spend most of their lives struggling to earn a living, a much smaller number seem to have everything going their way. Instead of just earning a living, the smaller group is busily working at building and enjoying a fortune. Everything just seems to work out for them. And here sits the much larger group, wondering how life can be so unfair, so complicated and unjust. What’s the major difference between the little group with so much and the larger group with so little?
Despite all of the factors that affect our lives—like the kind of parents we have, the schools we attended, the part of the country we grew up in—none has as much potential power for affecting our futures as our ability to dream.
Dreams are a projection of the kind of life you want to lead. Dreams can drive you. Dreams can make you skip over obstacles. When you allow your dreams to pull you, they unleash a creativeover obstacles, that can overpower any obstacle in your path. To unleash this power, though, your dreams must be well defined. A fuzzy future has little pulling power. Well-defined dreams are not fuzzy. Wishes are fuzzy. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you forward, your dreams must be vivid
If you’ve ever hiked a 14,000-foot peak in the Rocky Mountains, one thought has surely come to mind: How did the settlers of this country do it? How did they get from the East Coast to the West Coast? Carrying one day’s supply of food and water is hard enough. Can you imagine hauling all of your worldly goods with you... mile after mile, day after day, month after month? These people had big dreams. They had ambition. They didn’t focus on the hardship of getting up the mountain.
In their minds, they were already on the other side—their bodies just hadn’t gotten them there yet! Despite all of their pains and struggles, all of the births and deaths along the way, those who made it to the other side had a single vision: to reach the land of continuous sunshine and extraordinary wealth—to start over where anything and everything was possible. Their dreams were stronger than the obstacles in their way.
You’ve got to be a dreamer. You’ve got to envision the future. You’ve got to see California while you’re climbing 14,000-foot peaks. You’ve got to see the finish line while you’re running the race. You’ve got to hear the cheers when you’re in the middle of a monster project. And you’ve got to be willing to put yourself through the paces of doing the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable, because that’s how you realize your dreams.
"Fascination is one step beyond interest. Interested people want to know if it works. Fascinated people want to learn how it works." —Jim Rohn

Ageless Beauty Secrets!
Dear Martin,
Who doesn’t want a sparkling smile?
It’s no secret that good teeth can help enhance your appearance and boost your overall self-confidence. And for the most part, people define “good teeth” as bright, white, and stain-free.
Did you know that teeth whitening is the number one most requested cosmetic procedure in the United States?1 And it doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.
People have been able to take advantage of professional whitening services from their dentists for over 50 years now. And today, you can find whitening strips, gels, trays, and lights anywhere from your dentist’s office to your local grocery store. They’re quick, easy to use, and can be very effective at removing unsightly stains.
Reduce the Age of Your
Skin By Up to 30%
Remarkable Extract
Literally HALTS the Aging
of Your Skin Cells
Today you have the ability to turn back the hands of time and reset the time keepers that control your skin’s aging.
This new secret rejuvenates your skin from the cellular level, adding decades of youth and vibrancy to your face. So no matter what your age, in just a few short weeks you can…
Visually reduce lines and wrinkles.
Plump up your skin’s elasticity and moisture.
Reverse sun and aging spots.
Look younger than you have in years!
Get started today and begin showing a younger face to the world.
Perfect, right? Not really.
Most of these products contain some kind of peroxide to remove the stains. In some cases, the hydrogen peroxide, along with a variety of other chemicals found in these products, can cause alarming problems such as gum irritation, tooth sensitivity, and – in some cases – tooth decay.
Yep. These products that you may be using to make your teeth look better could make them rot and fall out.
Overuse of at-home whitening kits has some serious risks. Not only can they cause over-sensitivity, they can also damage tissues and wear the enamel down so much that your teeth look almost see-through and very unnatural. Eventually, they can become odd shades of blue and gray.2
You see, the off-white color of teeth that most people find unsightly and unattractive is the color that our teeth are meant to look. It’s really a good thing.
The color of your teeth is based on the amount of calcium in your teeth’s enamel. The more calcium you have, the more color is in your teeth. But, when you use bleach, you’re using a product that contains abrasives so it can scrub away stains left by food, drinks, and other things like smoking. But, it can also scrub away the enamel on your teeth.
This is called demineralization.
Demineralization happens when substances that you put in your mouth starts to dissolve your tooth’s enamel. It can also damage the enamel’s calcium, which can lead to tooth decay.3
Tooth decay can cause a variety of issues including pain, tooth loss, infection, chewing problems, and serious infection that can travel to other parts of your body and make you very ill.
Also, it’s important to remember that bleaching products are fairly new on the market. We still don’t know any of the long-term side effects that may occur.
But, if you’d like to get a more dazzling smile, why don’t you give some natural alternatives a try:
1. Strawberries. Mash up strawberries into a pulp and mix with a little sea salt and rub on teeth.
2. Baking Soda. Put a little on your tooth brush with your regular toothpaste.
3. Crunchy Vegetables. Celery, carrots, broccoli, and cucumbers are naturally abrasive and can help scrub away stains.
To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, MD

Despite pledges to change their ways, Congress is arguing over earmarks once again, those projects that usually benefit only one state or congressional district.
By Rob Hotakainen
McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — You're talking big money to get rid of a tattoo.
According to experts, the average cost is $50 per square inch per treatment.
Tattoos can be large, and it might take five to eight laser treatments to remove a black-and-white tattoo; color tattoos may require up to 12 treatments.
So if you're a defender of tattoo removal, you might say it's a good thing the $410 billion spending bill Congress is sending to President Obama includes $200,000 for a small California program that helps people get their unstained skin back.If you're an opponent, you might say it's a big waste of money.
"I would think under a personal-responsibility platform, if you were responsible for getting a tattoo put on you, you might ought to be responsible for getting it taken off, and I do not think our grandchildren ought to be paying for it," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.
Same old debate
Despite pledges to change their ways, Congress is arguing over earmarks once again, those projects that usually benefit only one state or congressional district. This year's twist, a fight over a tattoo-removal program that operates in a small clinic in North Hollywood, Calif., is prompted by Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., the earmark's chief sponsor.
He said the program, run by the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, wasn't pork.
Since a nun opened the clinic in 1998, the program has helped nearly 12,000 clients remove their tattoos. Dimitrios Alexiou, who ran the program for more than five years and now volunteers at the clinic, said the average age of clients was 30 and that most were in the job market and needed help getting their skin cleaned up. "They're caught between a rock and hard place," he said.
"They want to be able to get jobs but they can't afford to remove it, and they won't get hired with the tattoos." Berman said the money from Congress would help buy a new laser-removal machine, which would cost more than $100,000. He said nearly 90 percent of the clients served were former gang members who were required to log 48 hours of community service to earn three free treatments.
Alexiou said the money would benefit other states, noting that many of its tattoo-free clients end up getting jobs outside California. He said the new money also would help the program expand its outreach, with staff members going to schools and community events to warn youths of the medical danger and stigma that could result from getting tattoos. For Coburn, Congress' self-proclaimed earmark hawk, the money for the tattoo-removal program is just the latest sign of a free-spending Congress that's piling up debt on future generations.
Long list
Coburn offered a long list of questionable items that will be funded under the new bill: $1.9 million for the Pleasure Beach water-taxi service in Connecticut, $300,000 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of John Brown's raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia and $238,000 for the Polynesian Voyaging Society of Honolulu, which runs sea voyages in ancient-style sailing canoes. However, he called the tattoo-removal program "my favorite."
He said the bill contained at least $50 billion in waste, and noted the federal government is flat broke and can't afford the pet projects. The spending bill contains 7,991 earmarks totaling $5.5 billion, 40 percent of them from Republican lawmakers. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., had inserted nearly 100 earmarks worth more than $78 million in the spending bill, but supported an amendment offered by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that would have stripped all earmarks out of the bill.
She offered no explanation and declined to comment. The Senate approved the measure by a 62-35 vote. Obama has vowed to overhaul the earmark process and boasted the stimulus plan had no earmarks. But he plans to sign the 2009 bill despite the earmarks, saying it's last year's business, since most of the measure was written then. "I bet many presidents have signed bills that may not meet 100 percent of their desires," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said.
"This stuff should have been done before Sen. Barack Obama became President-elect Barack Obama and certainly before he became President Barack Obama."

Banks Paid Bigger Bonuses Than Income
by Grant McCool
NEW YORK - Bonuses paid to executives at nine banks that received US government bailout money in 2008 were greater than net income at some of the banks, the office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday. Cuomo, in a report on months of investigation into compensation paid by the banks, said employee pay "has become unmoored from the banks' financial performance
Representatives of the banks either declined comment on the report or could not comment immediately.
"There is no clear rhyme or reason to the way banks compensate and reward their employees," said the report by Cuomo, New York's top legal officer, who began his probe last October amid taxpayer complaints about Wall Street pay. He argued that, if firms followed "a more principled" bonus system, they would be less susceptible to poaching of their employees by other firms offering more pay.
"This rationalization of the compensation and bonus system must be accomplished now," said the report, which was sent to US House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Edolphus Towns, a Democrat from New York.
Since nine banks received a total of US$125 billion (S$180.74 billion) last October in taxpayer money under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) to help them survive the financial crisis, Cuomo has pressed them for details on billions of dollars paid to executives amid huge losses.
Substantially greater
The report said bonuses for Goldman Sachs Group Inc, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co were "substantially greater" than the banks' net income.
Goldman earned US$2.3 billion, paid out US$4.8 billion in bonuses and received US$10 billion in TARP funding, the report said. Morgan Stanley earned US$1.7 billion, paid US$4.475 billion in bonuses and received US$10 billion in TARP funding, while JP Morgan Chase earned US$5.6 billion, paid US$8.69 billion in bonuses and received US$25 billion in TARP funding.
Cuomo said his office studied historical financial filings and found that at many banks compensation increased in the 2003-2006 bull market years, but stayed at those levels as the mortgage crisis and recession hit. "Thus, when the banks did well, their employees were paid well. When the banks did poorly, their employees were paid well. And when the banks did very poorly, they were bailed out by taxpayers and their employees were still paid well.
"Bonuses and overall compensation did not vary significantly as profits diminished."
While Citigroup Inc and Merrill Lynch, bought by Bank of America Corp, lost more than US$27 billion each, Citigroup paid US$5.33 billion in bonuses and Merrill paid US$3.6 billion, the report said. TARP paid the two banks a combined US$55 billion. A spokesman for Bank of America said bonuses were paid to 200,000 bank employees and 30,000 Merrill legacy employees.
"The repeated explanation from bank executives that bonuses are tied to performance in a manner designed to promote (national economic) growth does not appear to be accurate," Cuomo said. Much of Cuomo's investigation and publicity had been focused on Merrill Lynch, but Thursday's report covered all nine banks that received initial TARP money. The office has also investigated bonuses paid by giant insurer American International Group Inc, but it was not included here.
Wells Fargo & Co paid bonuses of US$977,500, while losing US$42.93 billion according to the report. It said State Street Corp's State Street Bank and Bank of New York Mellon Corp "paid bonuses that were more in line with their net income, which is certainly what one would expect in a difficult year like 2008."
State Street earned US$1.8 billion, paid bonuses totaling about US$470 million and received US$2 billion in TARP funding. Bank of New York Mellon earned US$1.4 billion, paid out US$945,000 and received US$3 billion from TARP

Buying Diamonds Online
With all of the potential for scams concerning
diamonds, buying diamonds online almost
seems unthinkable! However, you actually
can purchase diamonds online, without any
problems – as long as you are careful.
First, think about your reasons for wanting to
purchase the diamond online, as opposed to
making a purchase from a local jewelry store.
The most common reason is price. Due to
low overhead costs, online jewelers and
wholesalers are able to offer lower prices.
However, you must be careful – sometimes
a price that is too low is a sure indication of
a scam.
One of the best things about purchasing
online is the unlimited selection. When
shopping offline, you are limited to the
selection in the stores in your general area.
Online, there are no limits. But again, you
must use a great deal of care and
consideration before handing your money
over to someone that you cannot see and
have never met!
Before shopping, learn as much as you can
about diamonds – especially cut, color,
clarity and carat weights. When you are
knowledgeable about diamonds, it will be
harder for a con artist to rip you off. Once
you know more about diamonds, you will be
ready to start shopping.
Take your time. Don’t purchase the first
diamond that you see that interests you.
Instead, look for similar diamonds for sale.
Do some comparison shopping to find the
lowest prices. Once you have found the
lowest price, start doing your investigation.
You know about diamonds, you’ve found a
diamond that you love, and you’ve found the
lowest price – but you are still quite a ways
away from actually purchasing that diamond!
Ask about the seller’s credentials, such as
professional jewelry associations that they
belong to. View and print the seller’s return,
refund, and upgrade policies. Also inquire
about additional services, such as settings
and mountings, sizing, and free shipping. Do
a search for customer reviews on this
particular company around the Internet. Also
check with the BBB Online to see if there have
been any complaints.
Ask for a diamond grading report from an
independent laboratory such as GIA, HRD,
EGL or AGS. You should see this before
making a purchase. Finally, use a reputable
escrow service for high dollar diamonds –
preferably one that will have the diamond
appraised while it is in their possession. The
seller sends the diamond to the escrow
service, and you send the money to pay for
the diamond to the escrow service. The
escrow service has the diamond appraised,
sends the diamond to you, and sends the
money to the seller. This is the surest way to
protect yourself…again, make sure that you
use a reputable escrow service!

Revolutionary “Red Wine” Cream
Rescues Dry, Over-Stressed
Skin and Restores a Sexy,
Younger-Looking Glow
Dear Martin,
Researchers recently discovered a surprising new benefit of red wine…
It contains a powerful ingredient that can help make your skin appear younger.
You may have heard of this ingredient. We’ve known for years that it supports your heart and may help you live longer.
And now ongoing research shows that this anti-aging nutrient, resveratrol, may also help you maintain younger-looking skin.
Resveratrol is very popular as a supplement. But if you’re one of the thousands who take it orally, you’re missing out on the distinct advantages it can offer your skin.
As you’ll soon see, when you apply this potent antioxidant directly to your skin, it quickly goes to work to reduce the appearance of aging from your body and face.
Firms, Lifts, and Preserves Skin
Dermatologists at the University of Wisconsin found that resveratrol helps protect the skin from sun damage.1 And in vivo studies demonstrate that topical resveratrol improves skin tone, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and more.2

As these photos show, if you truly want younger-looking skin, resveratrol can make it happen.
But before your rush out to buy a resveratrol skin cream, let me tell you the same thing I tell my patients: Make sure you… Get a Form of Resveratrol That Does More Than
Your Typical Over-the-Counter Cream Imagine turning back the clock and having radiant skin.
If that’s what you want, you can’t just extract resveratrol from grapes or red wine, add it to a cream, and then expect your skin to start looking younger. The Scoop on Resveratrol
Just Keeps Getting Better and Better…
While resveratrol has recently been subjected to extensive research and experiments, it will take more time to confirm all of its exciting health benefits…
For example, scientists originally thought resveratrol was just good for the heart.
Then, a feature on 60 Minutes indicated that resveratrol may help increase life span and promote overall good health.
Today, it’s widely thought that resveratrol has a range of unique health properties. And thousands of people take it each day to help them live longer, healthier lives.
Now you can apply resveratrol to your skin to help reduce the visible signs of aging by giving it the real support it needs to remain smooth, firm, and radiant. If only it were that simple…
The problem is resveratrol has limited stability and water solubility. So converting it to a “usable” topical form that can actually help over-stressed skin can be a bit tricky.
But, after doing some research at our Wellness Research Foundation, I found a unique way around that. I discovered a novel process that not only makes topical resveratrol usable, but it makes its benefits more pronounced. In fact, this process even creates attributes that exceed the compound’s original benefits.2 It’s More than Cosmetic… It’s Advanced Nutrition for Your Skin
Until recently, skin care was restricted to mainly cosmetic applications such as topical creams rather than internal nutrition. But now, some skincare companies are catching on to something I’ve been saying for years:
The skin is a reflection of internal health and well-being.
And now one innovative company makes a form of resveratrol that goes beyond traditional cosmetic applications. It’s a nutritional regimen that can be used for anti-aging purposes.
It’s called “Metrabiotics™ Resveratrol” and it’s a unique topical nutrient that is obtained using a cutting-edge technology that ferments resveratrol with yeast.
First, the yeast uses resveratrol as a nutrient. Then, through the metabolic process, the yeast converts resveratrol into a more bioavailable form. Ultimately, this fusion of an antioxidant with a microorganism results in a synergistic extract that offers distinct advantages to skin cells.
In vivo and in vitro data have shown that Metrabiotics™ Resveratrol…3 Improves skin tone by promoting the production of collagen.
Reduces the appearance of wrinkles by improving the skin’s structural integrity.
Lifts the skin and smoothes the appearance of expression lines.
Increases hydration and improves overall appearance of the skin.
When you apply Metrabiotics™ Resveratrol, you should see an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles, a more even skin tone, and an improvement in the appearance of fine lines around your eyes within a month.
I was very impressed when I finished my in-depth my research on this nutrient. So when I created SILK, my own breakthrough anti-aging and moisturizing cream, I included Metrabiotics™ Resveratrol as the main nutrient. Look Younger… Without Surgery or Harmful Chemicals
These days you can look younger than your real age without surgery or harmful chemicals. And it’s all because of the latest research and development in skin nutrition and cosmetics.
SILK helps reverse the visible signs of aging by combining the best of Nature and technology. It doesn’t just zap the free radicals that attack your skin.* Clinical results show that it also increases hydration and promotes collagen synthesis.4
And to make SILK even more effective, I added 9 additional anti-aging ingredients. Each ingredient on its own nourishes and supports your skin. But when you add them all together, SILK offers jam-packed support in one convenient product.
Here are some of the other big-time players in SILK:
Nutrient Benefit
CoQ10 Maintains healthy cells*
Keeps older cells functioning more like younger cells*
Maintains younger-looking skin*
Alpha Lipoic Acid Makes skin appear younger*
DMAE Reduces appearance of wrinkles*
L-Carnitine Helps the skin maintain moisture*
Retinol Reduces the visible signs of aging*
Vitamin E Promotes healthy-looking skin*
Chamomile Promotes healthier looking skin*
Glycerin Improves the appearance of the skin*
Hyaluronic Acid Smoothes and softens the skin*
SILK doesn’t just affect your skin from the outside, filling in wrinkles and fine lines like makeup. It contains the ingredients you need to help your skin function and repair itself as it should. For instance, SILK doesn’t include collagen; it stimulates your body to make more collagen on its own. In other words, SILK helps your skin look younger, not by masking the signs of aging, but by giving your body the support it needs to nourish, preserve, and support your skin. SILK Is the All-In-One Cream That Moisturizes, Repairs, and Protects Your Skin
If you’re like my patients, you’re frustrated by trying to find a skincare product that works. The worst part is that often the most expensive anti-aging skincare products are the most ineffective. One of the reasons most creams, lotions, and moisturizers don’t work is that many companies churn out products without doing the proper research and development. They put traditional, but health-damaging, compounds, such as parabens, carcinogens, and gasoline distillates, in their skincare products and rush them out the door.
SILK is a completely natural blend of the most powerful skin nutrients. It works with your body to promote younger-looking skin rather than just cover it up. Extend Your Skin’s Youth Span for Years to Come Your skin is one of the first things people notice about you. Get this amazing anti-aging and moisturizing breakthrough right away and significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and loose, baggy skin.*
As always, you risk nothing when you order SILK. You can always get your money back (including your shipping and handling) if you don’t get the results you hope for or if you change your mind for any reason.

What's Hiding In Your Shampoo
Dear Martin,
Years ago, I discovered that certain shampoos were pretty much guaranteed to give me consistent “bad hair days.” My hair would either be dry and frizzy or limp and unmanageable
Back then, I thought it was just my hair type.
Today, I know better. Turns out almost all commercial shampoos and conditioners are full of chemicals that will destroy the health of your scalp and hair
I have patients who are shocked when I tell them about it. Here they are, buying the most expensive designer hair products, yet their hair is dry, thinning, and losing its luster.
Who Says Working Moms Can’t Have It All?
My patients often ask me how I’m able to juggle my career, raise a family, and maintain a wonderful marriage year after year.
And even find time to work on my first book.
I tell them it’s not always easy. But it’s something I have total control over.
You simply need to have the right attitude, make smart choices, and develop positive relationships.
But just look at what I find in these shampoos…
Sodium laurel sulfate
makes your shampoo foam up. But it’s so damaging, scientists use it to irritate skin so they can discover how to heal it. It corrodes hair follicles so badly it can make your hair fall out and not grow back.
Diethanolamine DEA and Cocamide DEA are also chemicals that help shampoo lather up. They can make your hair dry and unmanageable. Worse, while sitting on the store shelves… or your bathroom counter… they react with other ingredients to form a potent cancer-causing chemical that gets absorbed right through your skin.
Parabens, like methylparaben and propylparaben,
act as preservatives. Parabens not only irritate the skin – which can make your scalp unhealthy – they can also affect your hormonal balance.
Formaldehyde,
found in some shampoo products, is bad news! Excessive exposure can lead to hair loss. It’s cancerous, can cause headaches and respiratory problems… and can even damage your DNA.
Alcohol.
Don’t ask me why anyone would put alcohol in shampoo. It will dry your hair out and irritate your scalp. Always avoid hair care products that contain alcohol.
There are a whole lot more ingredients in shampoo that aren’t good for you or your hair, but these are five of the biggest offenders.
So, if you love having thick, shiny, and lustrous hair, start reading ingredients and selecting the most natural products you can find. Bypass anything that contains the chemicals listed above. And do your homework! If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, look it up on the internet. Chances are good anything that sounds “scientific” or can’t be pronounced is bad for your hair.
Here are a few more tips to keep in mind while searching for the perfect natural shampoo that’s right for you…
1. If you have dry or damaged hair, look for shampoos that contain these truly natural moisturizers: shea butter, coconut oil, or avocado oil. They’ll not only seal in moisture; they’ll also add shine and keep your hair hydrated throughout the day.
2. For oily hair, lemon and other citrus ingredients can naturally remove that “grimy” feel and leave your hair feeling soft and bouncy. Green tea can also have a clarifying effect.
3. To get rid of dandruff, try products with tea tree oil, eucalyptus or aloe vera. They’ll help revitalize, cleanse, and heal your scalp.
